Crosswalk Safety 101
Each time you use a crosswalk as a pedestrian, or drive near a crosswalk in your car, you have an opportunity to improve the safety of Cheyenne’s streets.
It only takes a second to make a safe choice, and the safety of our community’s crosswalks depends on what you choose.
Crosswalks 101:
Tips for Pedestrians
LOOK
Before entering the crosswalk, look left, right, left for moving cars.
LOCK
If you see any cars, lock eyes with each driver to make sure they see you, too.
LISTEN
Listen for traffic and continue to look left, right, left as you cross.
TIPS FOR DRIVERS:
Crosswalk Safety
NEVER PASS A CAR THAT’S STOPPED OR SLOWED
Never pass another car that’s slowed or stopped near a crosswalk; they may be stopped or slowing down to let someone cross.
MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH PEDESTRIANS
When you stop to let someone cross, lock eyes with them. (We know; it’s kind of awkward. But it lets pedestrians know you see them and that it’s safe to cross.)
DON’T ENCOURAGE CROSSING OUTSIDE OF CROSSWALKS
If you notice someone at an unmarked intersection, don’t encourage them to cross.
DISTRACTION-FREE IS THE WAY TO BE
Any time you’re driving, but especially near a crosswalk or in a pedestrian-heavy area, always be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert to sights and sounds!
NOW, YOU’RE READY TO PUT YOUR NEW SKILLS TO USE!
See you at the crosswalk!
TOGETHER, WE CAN CREATE A SAFER CHEYENNE
Crosswalk safety is only the beginning. Whether you’re a driver or a pedestrian, you have an important role in making our community’s roads safer for everyone.
